Totem time, path, using reactors or not, and the crafting type you choose from the menu will affect the outcome. Skills are based on successes, not on materials used.
There are 5 types of skills that can be done: Gathering, Manufacturing, Refining, Cooking and Mental skills.
Gathering skills can be done by anyone level 8 and above. They include Woodcutting, Mining and Fishing.
Special tools are needed for Woodcutting and Mining. An Axe is required to do Woodcutting, and can be obtained from Splinter at 137,187 in the wilderness. Or you may use a Hunang's axe. A Mining Shovel and Mining pick are required to do Mining, and can be obtained from Thane at 185,19 in the wilderness. To woodcut, simply equip your axe and step up to a tree in one of the many groves and hit at it. With mining, the shovel is dropped first, and when something is found, the mining pick is then dropped to unearth the item. Once something is mined from a spot, it's usually a good idea to mine that spot a bit longer for more items. Fishing requires no special tools and can be done simply by saying "Fish" to one of the NPCs located in either of the 3 kingdoms. In kug, the NPC 'Bate' can be found near the area of 26/169. In Buya, the NPC 'Wim', can be found near the area of 105,88. And in Nagnang, The NPC 'Kwak', can be found at 46,54.
Manufacturing skills can be done by anyone level 25 and above. They include Weaving, Gemcutting and Smelting. To gain levels higher than Accomplished, one must "specialize" in a skill. You may do all three, but can specialize in only one of the manufacturing skills.
Special tools are needed for two of the manufacturing skills. A set of Weaving tools, or Fine weaving tools is required to weave wool into cloth. These can be obtained from a person who is a carpenter. A Smelting agreement is required to smelt ores into metal. This can be obtained from the Buyan messenger shop.
Refining skills can be done by anyone level 50 and above. They include Carpentry, Tailoring, Jeweling and Smithing.
Cooking skills can be done by anyone level 8 and above. They include Food preparation and Chef.
Special tools are needed for one of the Cooking skills. One Water jug is required for each attempt at preparing noodles. The empty jug can then be re-filled behind the Kugnae warrior guild at the river.
Mental skills can be done by Mages and Poets level 50 and above. They include Alchemy and Scribe.
